Simple Cure For Depression
Yet another biological link between mental illness such as depression and schizophrenia and the physiology of the brain has been discovered by researchers at the Douglas Mental Health Institute at the University of Montreal.
Anhedonia, or the inability to enjoy the simple pleasures as great as the average person is a symptom of diseases such as depression. It may also be due to a smaller area of the brain that are processed pleasures. The researchers found that patients suffering from anhedonia Douglas were as small surface area of the brain called the caudate nucleus above. This area of the brain regions located in the center, is responsible for pleasure and reward.
MRI of patients with different degrees of anhedonia, those who have suffered most from this disease pleasant images, like a beautiful waterfall in the brain responsible for understanding, rather than in the caudate nucleus above. Twenty-nine patients selected for the study had not previously diagnosed with a mental illness. Their degree of anhedonia was measured by a questionnaire, including questions such as "I generally agree that making love is an intense pleasure, which were rated on a scale ranging from" strongly agree "to "strongly agree" those who choose to "strongly disagree" on these issues to be considered very anhedonia.
"The assumption is that because they do not feel as much pleasure as other people, when considering the positive information they need to process at the cognitive level," said the lead author Philippe-Olivier Harvey Montreal Gazette. "So there is a real lack of fun and they must compensate for this by an overactivation of this region (cognitive) brain."
For those who enjoyed the pleasure normally, this area of the brain, located just behind the forehead, was not active.
These results are important for advocates of mental illness different biological connections. It will also help treat certain forms of depression and schizophrenia easier than a single MRI can tell doctors a patient has a difficult time feeling pleasure and adjust treatment accordingly.
"It has been well established that anhedonia is a key symptom of major depression and schizophrenia," said Douglas researcher Martin Lepage. "We chose to study the main symptom, in the hope of finding a marker vulnerability to better diagnose these mental illnesses. "
